Today marks a significant day in the history of Bhutanese democracy as citizens of the small nation cast their ballots in an unprecedented manner to select a leader for the upcoming term.
In what was the first election taking place with the entire nation adhering to a strict COVID-19 related protocol, Bhutan has declared the official winner of the elections today – a result that has been hailed in the country as a demonstration of its unified strength in challenging times.
Both major political parties, the Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa (DPT) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), vied for the support of their fellow citizens with numerous key policies focusing on health, education, economic growth, and national security. Despite a relatively close margin, the Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa triumphed over the latter by securing total of 33 seats in National Assembly, giving the leader of the party, Dr Lotay Tshering, mandate to lead Bhutan in the upcoming five-year term.
In the victory speech delivered after the Bhutan Winner Result today was declared, Dr Lotay Tshering delivered an emotional speech thanking the Bhutanese people for their unwavering support.
